The bible
Paper, mirror
Just as one looks in a mirror to see themselves physically, to make any needed changes in their appearance, so one must look in the mirror of the soul to see themselves as God truly beholds them. What do you see when you look at your soul? Are there changes that need to be made? Do you like what you see? More importantly, does God like what is revealed there? Are you willing to make the necessary changes in your spiritual appearance if it is blemished?

Project V
Open
Given that you are being asked to move
into a professional realm with your skills and conceptual
development, the parameters of this project are to be determined by
you in consultation with your teacher.
You will determine;
theme
materials
scale
technique
installation
The project needs to fit into your body
of work concepturally and should sit comfortably with the other works
as part of your overall exhibition.
Suggested timeframe is approximately
six weeks, but as with your other work, this will be governed by the
exhibition deadline.

The
bible
Just
as one looks in a mirror to see themselves physically, to make any
needed changes in their appearance, so one must look in the mirror of
the soul to see themselves as God truly beholds them. What do you see

Do you like what you see? More importantly, does God like what is
revealed there? Are you willing to make the necessary changes in your
spiritual appearance if it is blemished?
- the bible as the mirror for the soul
What
is the artwork about : self reflection
encounter
: given book by Peter Wallace at first DNA ( fellowship) group
meeting
revelation/experience
: realisation that the bible had been changing me
Yet
the Bible provides us with a unique kind of “mirror” which
reveals
their
nature and interrelationship, and shows us how each is intended to
function. Failure
to
use this mirror correctly exposes us to much inner frustration and
disharmony.
Only
the mirror
of Scripture
can reveal to man his own inner nature and restore true harmony.
Just
as we looked into a mirror to fix our hair , we “look” as we read
into that mirror to remove a splinter from our eye.
“Do
not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it
into practive. Whoever listens to the word but does not put it into
practice is like a man who looks in the mirror and sees himself as he
is. He takes a good look at himself and then goes away and at once
forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks closely into the
perfect law that sets people free, who keeps on paying attention to
it and does not simply listen and then forget it, but puts it into
practice – that person will be blessed by god in what he does.”

- What research did you engage with ? Artist contemporary or traditional
what did I look at when
brainstorming
primary research focused on the nature
and purpose of the bible as a whole. Including other 'living' books
and their role in the development of our society. Brainstorming into
display method for best support concept and the materiality of the
final sculpture.
research into:
- book art/sculpting
- how to drill holes in books
- timber repair, removal of ship wax
- suitable/safe mirrored surfaces and the online supplier for the baby safe mirrors that were used
- suitable bible passage for the mirror bible to be opened on

- book sculpture

- Leng Bin Chen – cuts books into shapes of buddah heads
- Susan Londermilks – book artist
- Miler Lagos – book installation artist
3. Discuss the planning of your
project , including experimentation , technique selection, overcoming
technical problems and determining limitations and constraints (
Refer to your journal)
experimentation and technique
selection , why ?:
a series of marquettes
were made, with real books, to test;
- techniques for drilling
- painting of super crome spray paint to gain maximum reflection
- methods for attaching the mirror to the books with various glues
getting text onto the mirrored surface;
- printing onto transparent stickers
- printing directly onto the mirror
- eucalyptus transfer, lazer printer , ink jet, photocopy and newsprint
repair of the pulpit;
- removal of the glue
- removal of old base, construction of new base and addition of rubber stumbs for stability as well as construction of a timber plinth
- application of bees wax to seal the timber
technical problems
due to the poor condition of the pulpit
repair required some creative hiding of the damage, the previous
person to repair the pulpit had burnt shipping wax onto the timber
leaving irrepairable damage. To mask the damage I applied paint to
the wood filler after application.
Secondly I had great trouble finding a
method to apply text to the mirrored surface without losing the
reflectiveness, in the end I used a paper that had one side sealed
and a eucalyptus transfer technique to get a clean transfer
4. What aesthetic decisions did you
make? Eg working with particular equipment to achieve particular
effects, establishing a key , determining a palette and deciding upon
a format and a scale
display
Scale:
bibles come in many sizes, the size of
the bible was chosen for its use of filling up the pulpits space to a
point that I felt that it sat properly.
Display:
the pulpit is centrally place on a low
plinth to prevent viewers from knocking it over it they lean on the
pulpit. I have noticed that the plinth creates a barrier for people
and they seem to automatically respect the 'narative' of the artwork
as a result. I am unsure if the separation of the artwork with its
environment is nessesary visually but to cover OH&S risks of
injury of the artwork falling and damage of the work it is required
to have the pulpit attached to the artwork
6. How could you further develop
your techniques in relation to you professional practice ? How might
you build upon your ideas towards future work ?
This project has informed the final
drawing project for semester 2. Use of the book drilling technique
laid the foundation for futher exploration. Use of mirrored surfaces
has been an interest of mine also. And now knowing the variety
available , including tinted mirroring for glass/smooth surfaces and
metal chroming I can now take this materiality to support future
conceptual development.
